A huge fire break along Yalmy Rd bordering the Snowy River National Park was constructed under the supervision of former Department officer-cum-logging boss Gary Squires. This break was supposed to stop the spread of the massive wildfire which had burnt out a million hectares of land over a month. The fire break was constructed despite the fact that no containment line had managed to stop this fire and that breaks were of dubious value. During the construction of this fire break, parts of the National Park were clearfelled and the logs have subsequently "gone missing". These logs were Mountain Ash, very rare in East Gippsland and this stand formed part of their most eastern range in Victoria (see stump truck for pictures of how big these trees get).
The missing logs are being investigated. It is no coincidence that the supervisor of the fire break construction, Gary Squires, is also an executive of a large logging company which supplies logs to mills. One of the mill owners is also an executive in this company.
