Chipstop

the campaign to stop Daishowa

A new campaign has been launched in South East Australia to rid ourselves of the driving force behind forest destruction in this region. That force is Daishowa, the 100% Japanese owned export woodchip facility located in Eden NSW.

A few reasons why a campaign focussed on Daishowa is necessary:

  • It is estimated that Daishowa exports in excess of 700,000m3 of woodchips from East Gippsland's forests each year
  • Daishowa consumes over 95% of native forests in the Eden region of NSW, and currently over 50% of native forests in the Southern region of NSW (and it is expected that this will escalate rapidly).
  • Daishowa is Australia's oldest native forest woodchip mill. They have been exporting these forests for 30 years.
  • For the last 15 years they have been licenced to chip and export just under 1 million tonnes of these native forests per year

Chipstop is a collective campaign for forest campaigners on both sides of the border. Groups involved include GECO, CROEG, Bega Chipstop, Bega Environment Network, Bega Greens, The Wilderness Society (in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney) and Friends of the Earth.

Chipstop is part of the Boycott Woodchipping Campaign. While it appears hard to boycott specific products in the domestic market international links are being forged. Daishowa supplies to many known names including Ricoh, Canon, Minolta, and DaiNippon.
