Hemp

The Current Timber Industry is not Sustainable. It is subsidised by the government at a loss of millions to taxpayers. The pulp and paper industry has been slow to consider alternative fibres such as Hemp. If these unsustainable practices and mismanagement continue, our forests along with local employment prospects in the timber industry will continue to have an uncertain future. Locally grown and locally processed Hemp could create new jobs while utilising marginal agricultural soils (Hemp can rejuvenate marginal soils). Both clothing and paper can be produced from Hemp fibre, and the international market is growing rapidly. In the past hemp has been grown in the region showing that hemp can be grown in a cold climate.
